Working With Hospice Teams

The trust a family places in a hospice team is hard-won. When that team hands a family to us, we understand exactly what is being passed across.

What we ask hospice staff to tell families

Very little, and nothing that commits anybody. If a family has named Legacy, the nurse simply needs to know that, so that at the time of death the call comes to us and transport is dispatched without a second round of questions.

Families frequently do not know that arrangements can be made entirely by telephone, that nobody has to travel to Florida, or that a price is given in writing before anything is authorized. If a family is anxious about cost, those three facts usually settle more than anything else anyone can say.

At the time of death

Where a patient is under hospice care, the family should call the hospice nurse first and then call us, telling the nurse their loved one is entrusted to Legacy. We coordinate directly with the hospice from that point.

We answer at any hour, with a licensed funeral director rather than an answering service, which matters most at two in the morning when a family is at their least resourceful.

Continuity of support

The strong attachments formed in one supportive environment carry into another as a family moves through dying, death and bereavement. At no time should a family be without support, and we take that as an obligation rather than a sentiment.

Everything is gathered gently over the telephone. Clergy and licensed social workers are available where a family member wants an opportunity to share, and we would rather be asked than have a family assume it is not on offer.

For international families

A substantial share of hospice patients in Florida will be returned to another country. Those cases take longer and involve a consulate, so knowing the destination early genuinely changes the timeline. If a hospice team learns during care that a family intends repatriation, a short call to us at that point can remove days later, and costs the family nothing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should a family do at the time of death under hospice care?

Call the hospice nurse first, then call us, and tell the nurse their loved one is entrusted to Legacy. We coordinate directly with the hospice from that point and dispatch transport, usually while the family is still on the telephone.

Do you work directly with hospice teams?

Yes, across the Florida counties we serve. We deal with the facility and the family in parallel so nothing is waiting on a grieving relative to relay a message between two organisations.

A family is worried about cost. What can we tell them?

That arrangements can be made entirely by telephone with nobody travelling to Florida, that an itemized price is given in writing before anything is authorized, and that nothing is added afterwards. Those three facts settle most of the anxiety, and the prices are published on this site rather than quoted only on a call.

Request a written price or ask a question

Every request is answered by a licensed funeral director, usually within the hour.

A Direct Line for Hospice Teams

Call any hour and ask for the duty director. We would far rather answer a question early than solve a problem late.
